Exceptional care through every stage

A new organ is just the beginning. That’s why our team is here to offer support during every stage of the transplant process—from before and after surgery to recovery and beyond. This compassionate and life-changing care is a lifelong partnership with every one of our transplant patients.

Our nationally recognized surgeons are supported by a highly skilled team of nephrologists, hepatologists, Magnet-recognized nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers and transplant coordinators. This team reflects the diverse communities we serve and speaks multiple languages to better serve every patient who walks through our doors. Our transplant coordinators provide full-service care to both recipients and living donors, and our social workers help coordinate care for those struggling with alcohol use.

Nationally recognized expertise

A cornerstone of Northwell Health, North Shore University Hospital brings together a renowned team of surgeons from notable health institutions around the world. Our experts hold prestigious roles in the New York State Transplant Council and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, shaping best practices in New York state and across the nation. During the COVID-19 crisis, our team provided guidelines for safe organ transplantation during a pandemic.

State-of-the-art facilities

The experience at North Shore University Hospital exceeds those at other transplant programs in New York state and beyond. We are the only program on Long Island, and one of very few in New York state, equipped to provide single-port donor nephrectomy, a minimally invasive technique for living kidney donation. We also perform ABO incompatible surgery, which allows for kidney transplantation between some incompatible blood types. Our 18-bed transplant intensive care unit (ICU) features specialized negative pressure rooms and advanced telehealth capabilities that allow physicians to monitor patients in real time.
