Visiting hours & guidelines

Care is provided in a patient-centered atmosphere that is respectful and mindful of the important role visitors play in a patient’s well-being. Please keep the following visitation guidelines in mind.

Visitors are welcome at any time during the patient’s stay. Visitors may stay with a family member or friend who is being treated in the emergency department, outpatient services or ambulatory surgery. Patients can choose who can and cannot visit them while they are in our facility without regard to legal relationship, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

Limits on visiting from our staff must be reasonable, based on the patient’s medical condition and explained to patients and their chosen support persons and/or representative. Reasons for limiting visitation may include the following:

  • The patient requests restrictions or time limits for visiting
  • There are safety concerns, such as risk of infection
  • Visiting interferes with the care of other patients, including the need for their rest and privacy
  • A visitor has a current court order that restricts contact with the patient
  • A visitor becomes disruptive, threatening or violent
  • The patient is in a substance abuse or mental health treatment program that requires limited visiting

Visits from children

  • Children are welcome to visit a family member, but those under the age of 16 should be supervised by a responsible adult during their visit.
  • Young children are expected to stay with a responsible adult who is supervising them to ensure a safe and restful environment for the patient and other patients sharing the room.
  • There are no age restrictions for visiting children, but supervising adults are encouraged to keep their visit brief.

Quiet hours

Quiet Hours are from 9:30pm to 5:30am. We ask all staff, patients and visitors to help maintain a restful, healing environment for our patients. During this time, please lower your voices, limit visitors at the bedside and place cell phones on vibrate.

Smoke-free campus

North Shore University Hospital is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is not allowed in the hospital, or in any area outside the hospital, including the parking lots. This includes electronic cigarettes. The Center for Tobacco Control offers free stop smoking programs. Please ask a staff member for a brochure or call (516) 466-1980 for more information. Visitor ID badges

For the safety of our patients, visitors and staff—all visitors and patients, including guests of employees—must check in with security upon entering the hospital. Security personnel will scan the guest’s valid photo ID and/or take a picture and print a personalized badge for visitors to display and identify themselves on hospital property. Badges are used to scan through optical barriers at the entrances, must be worn at all times and will remain active for 72 hours, after which visitors must check in to obtain a new badge. Returning visitors need only mention their name for a badge. All information is stored on an internal secure database. Your safety is our priority. If you see an individual without a badge, please promptly inform a staff member.


Parking

Visitor parking is available in the Visitor Garage located directly across from the hospital’s main entrance circle at Entrance 3 off Community Drive. A valet parking service is located at the hospital’s main entrance. We are pleased to offer complimentary valet parking to handicapped patients and visitors. To take advantage of this service, please drive to the valet parking area at the main entrance and show your handicapped parking pass to the attendant.

If a patient’s stay exceeds 14 days, long-term access cards can be obtained from the Cashier’s Office or Admitting Office located in the Monti lobby. The hospital can issue long-term parking access cards for a patient’s emergency contacts (up to two). Cards can be given only to those designated by the patient, originally documented at registration in their medical record. Photo identification is required. Each access card will require a $25 refundable deposit that can be made by cash, check or credit.

Access cards allow unlimited garage access through the long-term stay. If you are the parent(s) of an infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), please have your ticket stamped on the unit and bring it to the Valet Booth, or the Security Desk. See the Cashier’s Office located on the first floor for full details. There is an attendant on duty from 8am until 11:30pm in the visitors garage. After hours, visitors can use the prepaid parking machine located inside the garage prior to exiting.

When you first arrive, access the hospital through Entrance 1, our one-stop arrival area with complimentary valet parking. Our concierge welcome service will greet you at the door and direct you to where you need to go.


Waiting rooms

Waiting rooms can be a place of anxiety, whether you’re a patient waiting for an exam or procedure or a visitor waiting to hear about their family member undergoing treatment. Our waiting areas provide a soothing space that helps relieve stress for patients, their families and friends. Features include:

  • TVs with closed-captioned programming for the hearing impaired
  • iPad kiosks to browse the internet, play games or check email

There are three waiting areas inside North Shore University Hospital:

  • Surgical Waiting Room on the second floor of the Don Monti Memorial Pavilion: (516) 562-8205
  • Cardiology Waiting Room on the first floor of the hospital
  • Family Waiting Room on the fourth floor of the Tower Building

Religious/spiritual services

Professional chaplains are available to provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and families for people of all faiths. They are trained to listen in an open and nonjudgmental way. Chaplains are in the hospital Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. To request a visit from a chaplain, please ask your nurse to contact the office, or call ext. 4043. After hours, leave a message or ask a staff member to call the chaplain on call.

  • Religious services: Catholic Mass is celebrated every Sunday at noon in the Rust Auditorium. Major Jewish holidays also are marked in the hospital. Other religious services are held upon request. Further details can be obtained in Chaplaincy Care brochures at the information desk or from the chaplain.
  • Meditation room: The Dr. Louis and Sylvia M. Lester Meditation Suite is located on the first floor of the Tower Pavilion near the tower elevator. Prayer requests may be left in the meditation room prayer box. The room is open to all.
  • Clergy: In addition to the chaplains from the hospital’s Chaplaincy Care Department, Catholic priests are available daily in the hospital. Eucharist ministers bring the sacrament to those patients who desire it. Other community clergy are available upon request.
  • Sabbath observance: Electric Sabbath candles are available from the Volunteer office. For more information, call ext. 4947. The Sabbath elevator is located in the Monti Pavilion. A Bikur Cholim room stocked with essential Sabbath/holiday resources is located on 4 Tower, opposite the family waiting room.

ATMs

If you need cash during your visit, ATMs are available in four locations:

  • On the ground floor of the Monti Pavilion
  • On the first floor of the Monti Pavilion, near the lobby
  • On the first floor at the Tower Building entrance
  • In the parking garage

Gifts & flowers

Our gift shop in the Monti lobby offers necessities and gifts to make life easier for patients, visitors and staff. All proceeds from the gift shop go to support the hospital auxiliary for programs to benefit our patients and their families. We offer a full selection including:

  • Flowers and cards
  • Baby apparel and gifts
  • Toiletries
  • Gourmet snacks
  • Boutique items including accessories, spa and beauty products and travel essentials
  • Newspapers, magazines, books and stationery

You can call the gift shop at (516) 562-4581. Hours of operation are 9am to 7:45pm daily.


Food & amenities

If you need refreshments while you’re visiting, we have healthy options for meals, beverages and snacks including kosher and halal meals upon request. Our cafeteria is located on the ground floor of the Monti Pavilion.

Hours for the cafeteria are as follows:

  • Monday through Friday from 6:30am to 8:30pm
  • Weekends:
    • 6:30am - 10:30am
    • 11:15am - 2:30pm
    • 5pm - 8pm

The Au Bon Pain café is located in the main lobby. It is open 24/7.


Lost and found

If you lose or find anything while at the hospital, you may contact the Environmental Services Department, which operates the hospital’s lost and found. It is on the ground floor of the Cohen Pavilion. You can contact the Environmental Services Department regarding lost and found items at (516) 562-4155.

The Information Desk helps patients and visitors get where they need to go. Located in the Monti lobby, our information desk can help you with:

  • General information such as locations for food, ATMs, gift shops and more
  • Maps and directions to hospital departments and physicians’ offices
  • Bus and train schedules
  • Parking information
  • Details about religious and spiritual services
  • Directions to other Northwell Health facilities
  • Upcoming events, news and weather on our digital bulletin board
