At North Shore University Hospital, we understand that back and neck pain can reflect a wide variety of complex problems. That’s why our multidisciplinary team creates an individualized treatment plan for every patient, harnessing advanced diagnostic tools and a full range of surgical and nonsurgical approaches to ensure the right care.
Our neurosurgeons work with specialists in orthopedics, rehabilitation and physiatry, and meet weekly to review cases and devise a coordinated strategy customized for each patient’s condition and symptoms. Treatments may include physical and occupational therapy, pain management and medication, and, if needed, minimally invasive or traditional open surgery.
Research and clinical trials
At the Bioengineering Biomechanics Laboratory at Northwell Health's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, our specialists are helping to advance the understanding of spine disease through research. A current focus is the role of inflammation and mechanical stress in disc degeneration, as well as stem cell behavior in the disc environment in both healthy and diseased states. Our scientists also use disc tissue obtained from surgery to understand the process of degeneration on a molecular level.
Our research also includes clinical trials. Recent examples include a study comparing Kypho-ioRT (a type of radiation therapy delivered during surgery) to conventional imaging-guided surgery for spinal tumors; another investigated Oxyplex, a collagen-based gel that may prevent scarring and improve postoperative pain. For more information on our clinical trials, speak with one of our spine specialists.
